Cinema From Tuesday, February 20, to Sunday, March 4 Fantasporto 2018 Oporto International Film Festival Great & small auditoriums • Rivoli Fantasporto, Oporto International Film Festival, is back for its 38th edition, from February 20 to March 4. As always, it is a festival of discoveries with film premieres from all over the world. The selection comprises roughly 150 films, from major names to others that Fantas introduced over the years, to yet others “unknown” to the Portuguese film scene. Many of the films have been awarded at major international competitions, and they’re all Portuguese pre-releases, some of which also European and even international ones. Fantas is increasingly solid and intended for the young cinephile audiences. As always, it features debates, workshops, exhibitions, book presentations, small performances and much more, once again surprising cinephiles and others by bringing to Porto around 200 professionals, including directors, producers, actors and actresses, and most importantly films to discover from every corner of the globe. The 38-year-old festival continues to have four competitive sections: Fantasy Films, Directors’ Week, Orient Express and Portuguese Cinema, to which Fantas pays special attention and highlights every year. To whet the appetite, for the time being it is worth mentioning, among many others, the world pre-releases of two Portuguese features, “Uma Vida Sublime”, by Luís Diogo, and “Aparição”, by Fernando Vendrell, two awarded directors both at Fantas and internationally. One of Fantasporto 2018 Career Achievement Awards also goes to Portuguese cinema, honouring Lauro António. Michael Winterbottom, whose most recent film “On the road” is competing, will receive another. Two other highlights are the retrospective of the internationally famous, yet unknown in Portugal, Chinese director (from Taiwan) Chang Tso-Chi, and a delightful showcase of the so-called Taiwan Black Movies in remastered prints.
