Adapted from Thackeray's masterpiece, Vanity Fair, this is the story of an 18th-century adventurer who seeks social advancement at any cost, through sex, war, and gambling. A film in which the “realism” is fantastic, with fabulous sets and costumes (which won Oscars) and prodigious photography by John Alcott, who used improved Zeiss lenses to reproduce the light of that era in interiors lit by candlelight, just as we see it in the great painters of the time. ─ Medeia Filmes
