Sinopse
In “An Enemy of the People” (1882), Henrik Ibsen directly and crudely exposed the collision between the individual and the collective; the breakdown of a man who discovers a truth and, when confronted by the town, realises that, manipulated by the press and by the authorities, it prefers live the lie. Family arguments, corruption, political manipulation, popular assembles and stonings, all this happens when Dr. Stockmann, at the start of the play, discovers that the water in the health baths (the town’s source of income) is contaminated. In the end he also discovers that the city itself is rotten, and even after being evicted, insists on staying on to “educate” society; believing that, one day, the citizens can be better: as individuals and as a collective. Could this be possible? Could each citizen be free in the democracy in which they participate? Who holds power?
